Detailed description of the degree programme

Chemical engineers engage themselves in the subject areas that shape our modern world. They know the processes, reactions and techniques required to produce steel, refine fuel and generate energy. Our Master’s programme in Chemical Engineering will optimally qualify you for work in research and development or for managerial responsibilities in industry or in the civil service. Since almost all courses are delivered in English, we will also prepare you for a future career in an international environment.

Objectives

After completing your Master’s programme, you will be perfectly qualified to undertake leadership roles in research and development, industry or the civil service. You will use your broadly based theoretical and practical expertise to deal independently with scientific tasks. You will be able to analyse processes and problems from the professional world of industrial chemistry in a theoretical way and to develop problem-focused and practice-oriented solutions using engineering methods. In the process, you will incorporate the knowledge of other fields as well.

Occupational fields

After graduating, you will be able to enter numerous areas of activities in a research or management position – such as in the chemical and pharmaceutical industries, the food industry or the power industry. You will also be qualified to enter the senior civil service. Alternatively, you may decide to follow up your Master’s programme with doctoral studies.

Content and course sequence

The Master’s programme in Chemical Engineering, lasting four semesters, is divided into two specialisations: Applied Chemistry and Chemical Processing. The modular programme structure will enable you to further develop your strengths or to add new qualifications to your toolkit.

Applied Chemistry is based on the following compulsory modules: Advanced Inorganic, Advanced Organic and Advanced Physical Chemistry. In addition, numerous optional modules from the areas of Organic Chemistry, Instrumental Analysis, and Materials Science will give you a lot of freedom to plan your studies according to your personal interests. The choice includes subjects such as Analytics of Materials, Gene Technology, and Nanotechnology.

Chemical Processing involves the following compulsory modules: Heat and Mass Transfer, Unit Operations, and Chemical Reaction Engineering. Here, too, you will have a wide range of optional courses to choose from, such as Environmental Technology, Petroleum Refining Processes, and Process Design.

Interdisciplinary modules on management topics (such as project management and personnel management) will round out your skills. In this area, you will add valuable key transferable skills to your technical profile, which you will need in your role as a manager.

Three projects that you will undertake in the course of the first three semesters will form a central element of the programme. While implementing your projects, you will practise using your creativity, working independently and gaining key methodological skills. In the fourth semester, you will conclude your course of study with a Master’s thesis, to be completed within the space of five months.

Why choose us

Our degree programme offers a high proportion of lab classes from the very first semester. You will independently apply your knowledge to case studies several times during the semester. Our modern labs will be available for this. The topics addressed in lab classes and project work are often based on ongoing research projects. This will enable you to get to know the process of real-life research and development projects while still at university. You will have the opportunity to become involved in interesting research projects at our department, which may possibly be your first step towards a career in research. With our good industry contacts in Germany and abroad and our contacts with partner universities across the globe, you will be able to study abroad for a semester. It goes without saying that you will receive credit for performances achieved elsewhere. Thanks to our joint activities with our partner universities in Cracow and Katowice, you will also have the option of obtaining a binational Polish-German degree.
