Hardly anyone has remained faithful to the specialist area. After 34 years, Georg Schumacher is due for well-deserved retirement. And yet he can't quite do without the students and his colleagues from the Department of Energy - Buildings - Environment. As an assistant lecturer, he still remains a little preserved at Münster University of Applied Sciences.

In August 1985, Georg Schumacher took up his work as a teacher for special tasks at the then Department of Supply Engineering. Since then he has taught chemistry and materials science. The engineer has introduced several generations of students to the subject of environmental technology in the water laboratory through experiments, practical courses and exercises, and has inspired them to do so.

He himself came to the FH Münster rather via detours.
His heart had always been for chemistry, but Georg Schumacher had always wanted to become a teacher. After his training as a chemical laboratory assistant, he first studied chemical engineering in Steinfurt. Then he also studied chemistry and geography as a teacher.

Freshly examined, the labour market in the 80s did not look exactly rosy for teachers. So the call to the FH Münster as a teacher came to him rather by chance. Georg Schumacher himself would never have dreamed that this would turn into 34 years. "Of course there were ups and downs in such a long time. But looking back, I really always liked our department very much. There is already some melancholy in it, now gradually saying goodbye", Schumacher said at a small ceremony to his farewell.

But he's not right out of woods. For the winter semester 2019/2020 he will continue to teach materials science until a successor is found. Schumacher feels well prepared for the time of the "right" retirement. "I have enough to do. I have to get used to the fact that a whole new phase in my life is beginning," says Schumacher. But he will also be able to fill this gap. So there is enough for the hobby gardener and beekeeper to do at home. For many years, working with wood in a variety of ways has been one of his hobbies and he is also involved in the board of the Kulturwerkstatt and in the Altenberge Family Alliance, which is particularly committed to refugees. Also very important: travelling with his wife Carla - over long distances by bike.

Georg Schumacher doesn't get bored so quickly!
