Whoever answers the question Engineer - the right thing for me? answered with yes, but fluctuates between industrial engineering and engineering, finds here the differences and similarities.

Engineering ...

Energy Engineering, the Building Services or the Environmental Engineering learn during their studies how to solve a technical problem. From mathematics over the technology up to the requirements of the energy, building and environmental industry everything stands on the timetable, in order to be able to develop successfully lasting solutions after the study. Business fundamentals and English are of course part of the curriculum.

... or technology and economy?

Industrial Engineers for Energy and Environmental Engineering and Industrial Engineers for Building Services are also trained in mathematics, science and engineering during their studies. At the beginning of their studies, they take almost the same basic modules as the engineers and cover the same range of subjects with their knowledge.

But industrial engineers are less concerned with depth in technical practice than engineers. In basic studies in energy, building and environmental engineering, for example, they do without the design engineering module because the design application is less relevant to them in their profession. Instead, business management modules such as general business administration, financing and controlling or marketing are part of their curriculum right from the start.

An "engineer light" is the industrial engineer but in no way. It is simply wrong to compare the two only on the basis of the engineering implementation. Industrial engineers, like engineers, master technical theory and understand what is important in design. During their studies, however, they do without what they don't need in practice and learn things that design engineers don't need.

Specialization is part of both

In our Bachelor's programmes, engineers choose one of the following subjects right from the start or industrial engineers from the third semester onwards Energy technology, Building services or Environmental technology.

For engineers and industrial engineers, the timetable then includes more in-depth content:

  • in the Energy technology for example solar energy, geothermal energy, power plant technology uam.
  • in the building services engineering for example heating technology, ventilation and air-conditioning technology, building automation uam.
  • in der Environmental technology for example urban hydrology, water protection, waste management etc.

Apprentices Industrial Engineers also take in-depth business management courses from the third semester onwards, such as

  • Human Resources Management
  • Brand management
  • Market research
  • Commercial law
  • Behavioral research
  • Communication training

You will need fewer technical modules to do this.

Career prospects for industrial engineers and engineers

Engineers and industrial engineers are in great demand, because our daily lives are permeated by ever more complex, technical systems. After graduating, they both hold a Bachelor of Engineering degree and have good career prospects. However, their tasks differ:

Tasks and employers of engineers

Engineers of energy, building and environmental technology plan, develop, organize, monitor, support customers or prepare quotations. Your employers can be, for example, planning and engineering offices, operators of hospitals, airports, operators of large, producing industrial companies, energy supply companies for electricity, gas or water, municipalities and municipal utilities. They are all looking for engineers who are able to assess issues not only in their field of expertise but also in larger contexts.

Tasks and employers of industrial engineers

Industrial Engineers work more communicative, for example in marketing, sales, controlling or in the management of hospitals or airports, large, producing industrial companies, energy supply companies for electricity, gas or water, municipalities and municipal utilities or engineering offices.
They form the interface between the various engineering and business management fields and, for example, translate each other's technical language. This is how they optimize and design efficient, sustainable processes.
