1. Instructions for the password reset

1.1 How can I change my password?

There is a separate FH website that will guide you through the password reset. There you can assign a new password. An individual one-time password is required for this.

The password reset does not work via the WLAN (eduroam) or the cable-bound network of the FH Münster. Reset your password via a computer or mobile device with an alternative trustworthy internet access.

Instructions can be found in the letter or email that you have received and in the video below.

Note for FH employees:

If you have not been able to change your password by your first day of work after July 2nd, do not - under any circumstances - connect your service device to the docking station or LAN.

Please proceed as follows:

  1. Open your laptop and boot it up.
  2. Log in offline with your ordinary user data.
  3. Once you are logged in, connect the laptop to the docking station/LAN.
  4. Now change your password as explained in the letter you've received (postal letter, email, letter received at the issuing points).
  5. Restart your laptop. This may take longer than usual. You may have to restart your PC several times before your computer is synchronised with the network.

1.2 How do I get my one-time password?

  1. On Thursday June 30th, 2022, a personalised letter has been sent by post to all university members (students, staff, lecturers, etc.) from whom we have the relevant private contact details. An email will follow between Friday July 1st, 2022 and Tuesday July 5th, 2022. In this letter or email you will find a link for your browser and alternatively a QR code to access the website.

Selected persons - for example, those with particularly sensitive IT access - have been actively approached to change their password beforehand.

Once you have changed your password, please ignore the letter.

  1. Departmental offices and Central Service Units

If you do not receive a letter from us, because e.g. for some reason we do not have your private contact details, you can obtain an individual one-time password at the Departmental offices and Central Service Units (for addresses and opening hours please see our website). There you must identify yourself with your European identity card, German driving license or international passport.

  1. Emergency solution for students and staff abroad

We have also created an authentication option for students and staff abroad - please, only use as a last emergency level when there is no access to your personalised letter. In these cases, please check question 3.1 for details.

1.3 How can I distinguish the characters of the one-time password?

Call up the page using the QR code. Then it is no longer necessary to enter the one-time password.
If you have received the one-time password by email, simply use the link in the email or copy the password into the reset form via the clipboard.

If both of the above possibilities are ruled out, use the following illustration to clearly distinguish the characters.

If your one-time password contains "-" (minus or hyphen) and you receive an error message, try using a " " (blank space) instead or, alternatively, type the password without the "-".

Mistyping, even several times, does not lead to the locking of the identifier or the one-time password.

1.4 My one-time password was not requested!

No need to worry. If you use the link or QR code of the letter you have received, you will not be asked for a one-time password. This is already included in the link and the QR code.

1.5 What to keep in my mind with my password?

Set a new secure password. Never use old passwords or passwords that you use in other logins (e.g. private email account, online shops etc.). Your new password must be at least 12 characters long and contain at least one small letter, one capital letter, one number and one special character.

The following characters are not allowed as special characters: & \ ; ` ´ ² ³ | § $ ~ ° €

We recommend the use of password safes such as https://1password.com, https://bitwarden.com or https://keepassxc.org.

In case you are generating a password via a password-safe, please check this password and substitute invalid characters by valid characters. Afterwards please, save this password.

1.6 How can I reset the password used for functional mailboxes?

If you can still receive and send emails, you don't have to do anything.

Some functional mailboxes (fhms123456@...) are so-called "shared mailboxes" which are linked to certain user circles. If you can still receive emails, even though you did not change the password, there is no need to worry; your mailbox then falls into this category. You can check this if you send an email to the functional mailbox.

You need to reset the password for all functional mailboxes that don't work after July 4th at 20:00 pm.

The reset of functional mailboxes (fhms123456@...) is made by the owner of the respective mailbox. You can see the mailbox(es) linked to you in MyFH Portal light. Please follow this link: https://myfh.fh-muenster.de/myfhportal/. You´ll find a click instruction on this confluence page. If you need to change the password, this will be marked in red letters. If you cannot see a functional mailbox account in your MyFH Portal light, then it is linked to another person.

In case the functional mailbox is assigned to a person who does not work at FH Münster anymore, or if you do not know who the owner is, please contact the IT support (it-supportfh-muensterde). They can link the functional mailbox to a new person.

1.7 Password change for alumni, retirees, external lecturers and certificate students

A separate password reset process has been established for alumni, retirees, external faculty, and certificate students. The process is as follows:

  • Please go to the following website: https://myfh.fh-muenster.de/
  • Click on the figure icon in the upper right corner of the window.
  • Click on "Forgot password?" below the central input mask.
  • Enter the private e-mail address you have on file with us and submit the request. If sending is unsuccessful or you do not have a private email address on file, please contact IT Support (it-supportfh-muensterde).
  • Check your private email box. You will receive an email from us with an activation link. Please click on this link and follow the link back to the portal.
  • Authenticate yourself with your date of birth and primarily with your personal LBV number or the ID of your FH card. As a retiree, please note that you have received a new LBV number with your retirement. For a password reset, we need the LBV number that was assigned to you before your retirement. You will find this as a file number on your remuneration notices. If you have neither the LBV number nor an FH card, please enter your FH identifier.
  • Now set a new password.

If you receive an error message during this process, please contact the departmental office of your choice. Otherwise, please send an e-mail to it-supportfh-muensterde and explain the error message.

You will find instructions for the new password above (1.3-1.5); in case of problems please read the next section or contact the offices indicated under "Contact & Help".

1.8 Password change for external BIB users

If you have not had an employment or study relationship with FH Münster in the past, no action is required

If you have studied or worked at FH Münster in the past, please follow the procedure described in 1.7.

2. Problems with the password reset

2.1 I haven´t received a notification. What should I do?

You might get emails with a few days delay. We expect all emails to be in on July 5th 2022. If you don´t use the FH network (WLAN or wired internet connection), it's sufficient to change your password later on. If you need a new password but so far haven't received a one-time password, please contact the departmental office of your choice to get an alternative password there.

There you have to identify yourself with your European identity card (e.g. the identity card currently valid in Germany), international travel passport or the German driving license. When checking ID cards which haven't been issued in Germany, the review might take some minutes. We ask for your understanding.

BIB guest users are usually not affected and do not have to change their password.

2.2 The one-time password doesn´t work

See notes under "Password reset instructions" > "How can I distinguish the characters of the one-time password?"

2.3 Whom can I contact concerning problems with the password reset?

If there are problems please contact the hotline at +49 (0)251 - 83-64555. Hotline opening hours are:

  • Saturday July 2nd, 9:00 am - 17:00 pm
  • Sunday July 3rd, 10:00 am - 14:00 pm
  • Monday July 4th to Friday July 8th, 8:00 am - 17:00 pm
  • Saturday July 9th, 11:00 am - 17:00 pm

Additionally you can contact the IT support (it-supportfh-muensterde).

3. Vacation, abroad, absence

3.1 I am not in Münster for a longer period of time and cannot access the one-time passwort, e.g. because of studying abroad. What can I do?

If you think that the letter with your one-time password might be at your home address, ask someone you trust to open it and digitally send you the contents with further instructions on how to reset your password.

If this is not possible, but you absolutely need access to a new password during your absence, please send IT Support an e-mail (it-supportfh-muensterde) with the following information:

  • Surname, first name
  • Department and degree programme
  • FH identifier
  • phone number
  • private email address
  • time zone
  • Type of ID document (not the document number!) you would like to use for verification (European ID card or international passport) + the country in which the document was issued
  • Briefly explain why you currently do not have access to your one-time password.

We will then check whether you are eligible for a Video-Ident procedure and contact you for authentication.

For capacity reasons, this procedure is only permitted for those cases that do not have the possibility to receive their password on site or to travel to do so - in particular students who live abroad. You will need a stable Internet connection that allows participation in a video conference with image transmission. We ask for your understanding since it may mean a waiting period of a couple of days.

3.2 I am currently away on vacation for some weeks and cannot access my one-time password. Is that a problem?

No. Enjoy your holidays. After your return, please use the letter to reset your password.

4. Outlook and Eduroam

4.1 Outlook or Eduroam are asking me for my new password, is this a normal procedure?

This is a normal procedure. Outlook as well as the network connection save the password separately. To do this, simply enter the new password when prompted for a password. The two systems will automatically send a notification when a password update is required. In your Outlook programme, put a Check in the entry "save password". You do not need to re-boot your laptop/computer.

4.2 Eduroam does not work - although my password reset has been successful.

After you have successfully reset your password in myFHPortal, in some programmes like Outlook or Eduroam it is necessary to enter your password again. This is the usual procedure when you change your password.

It is possible that you may not be able to log into Eduroam immediately. In this case you may have to delete your current Eduroam profile and create a new one.

Delete:

  • Open the WLAN menu in the lower right of the taskbar.
  • Choose "network settings" or "network and internet settings".
  • Click on the entry "manage network settings" or click on "WLAN" in the menu bar on the left (depending on the system version).
  • Below the headline "manage known networks "you will find "eduroam". Please click on this entry and afterwards click "do not save".

Create new:

  • Click on the WLAN symbol at the bottom right of the task bar.
  • By clicking on the entry "eduroam" and afterwards "connect" you can dial into the network.
  • Now enter your login data: e.g.  mm123456fh-muensterde and the new 12-digit password.

5. Microsoft Azure Cloud and Sciebo

5.1 Why should I also change my password at Microsoft Azure-Cloud and Sciebo?

These two services offered by FH Münster do not work with the central FH password since they do require their own password. For security reasons, here the password must be reset as well.

5.2 Azure-Cloud and Sciebo: How do I change my password?

Sciebo: The instructions for changing your password can be found here: https://hochschulcloud.nrw/hilfe/konto/

Please follow the instructions:

  • Open my.sciebo.
  • Select FH Münster
  • If you not already done, log in.
  • Click on "Change password".
  • Enter your new password. Possible are upper and lower case letters, numbers and the following special characters: . : ; = ! # ( ) +¬ , - _ /
  • Confirm the password change

Note: Currently the Sciebo password cannot be reset from within FH Münster. You must use a mobile or private internet line to do this.

Microsoft 365 or Azure Cloud: You can find the link under MyFH Portal > My IT Services > Manage MS Azure. If this area is not yet available, the password reset for this area is not yet enabled. Please try again the next day.

5.3 I am supposed to reset my Sciebo and Azure account, but I am unable to do so.

Sciebo: the Sciebo password currently cannot be reset from within FH Münster. You will need to use a mobile or private internet line to do this.

Microsoft 365 or Azure Cloud: If this area is not yet available, the PW reset for this area is not yet enabled. Therefore, try it again the next day. Then you will find the link under MyFH Portal > My IT Services > Manage MS Azure.

6. Passwort changed - and now?

6.1 What do I do with the letter if I have reset my password?

Now the printed code on the letter is invalid. Please dispose the document in the paper trash.

6.2 I changed my password and then forgot it again.

If you have a private email address on file at FH Münster, you can reset your password again via the myFH portal. However, for identification purposes you will be asked for information known only to you.

6.3 Staff with FH laptop:

Once you log in for the first time in the FH network after having reset your password - for example by connecting your device to the docking station - the old password is still in use. In this case, you need to log in with your old password. Once your laptop has connected to the FH network, it will be synchronised and your new password will be updated. From that moment on, you can and must log in with your new password.

In case the login with your new password does not work, you can try the following measures:

  • If you are connected through LAN/the docking station, disconnect your device from it and re-start it. In some cases the update/ synchronisation works better through WLAN.
  • Re-starting your laptop, even several times, can also help in some cases.

As soon as all services will go back online (such as the myFH portal), you can immediately login with your new password.

6.4 Will all IT systems be available again after the password reset?

Unfortunately, no. The password reset is just the technical prerequisite for us to gradually bring our IT systems and services back online after another security check. It is possible that after the password reset there will be short-term problems with the currently available systems. Those will be fixed as soon as they become known.
