We warmly invite you to our Welcome Meetings for international students. Please register via our FHiRST-Activities.

Application, Acceptance and Enrolment

Application

You have to apply via the Admission Office at Service Office of FH Münster University of Applied Sciences.
Depending on your study programme the application process will be online or via postmail.
Your documents will be checked there and you will be admitted to the degree programme of your choice when meeting the requirements. Afterwards, you will be enrolled. In the link below you will find all information on the application process such as requirements, required documents, deadlines.

Visa and residence permit

Visa and residence permit

Depending on where a student comes from, a visa may be required for entering Germany. Visas should be applied for as early as possible because is often takes a while to be processed. It is important to apply for a study visa - a simple tourist visa is not sufficient. When applying for a visa, proof must be provided that the student has sufficient funds to study in Germany (Euro 934 per month / Euro 11.200 per year). The German diplomatic missions abroad can provide further information about how to apply for a visa.

If your visa was given only for a period of 90 days, you will have to apply for residence permission at the Immigration Office.

Please note that the visa will be issued specifically for your chosen subject at the university you wish to attend. For this reason, it is not possible to change subjects or universities during a period of study.

If you nevertheless intend to change subjects or universities for any reason, it is vital that you contact the Foreigners' Registration Office beforehand to clarify whether an exception can be made in your case.

After asking for an appointment at the Foreigners Office in Münster (see "online appointment"), you should receive an answer within 7 days from the person who is in charge of your application.
In Steinfurt, you should receive an invitation for an appointment via post mail after your registration at the Citizen's Office.

Health Insurance for international students

Health Insurance Card

You must have health insurance in order to study in Germany.

For students from the EU, the following applies: Germany has concluded social security agreements with some countries, including the member states of the European Union and the European Economic Area. If you come from one of these countries and have statutory health insurance there, you can have this insurance coverage recognized in Germany by a statutory health insurance fund. As a rule, you will need a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) for this purpose. You can apply for the EHIC free of charge at your health insurance company. Please contact a German statutory health insurance company upon enrollment and show them the EHIC. Ask the health insurance company to report your insurance status to us using the registration reason M 10 FH Münster (H0001824). As soon as you accept a job, you have to change to the statutory insurance.

For students from non-EU countries the following applies: Please take out German health insurance before or after your entry into Germany. In Germany there are statutory and private health insurances. Statutory health insurance costs about 110 euros per month and offers comprehensive protection and good benefits.

If you are under 30 years of age, you may join the statutory insurance. If you are already older than 29 when you start your studies, you can only take out private insurance.

How do I become a member of a statutory health insurance? You apply for membership. This is already possible in your home country. Full insurance is usually only activated once you have provided SEPA bank details and entered Germany.

The health insurance companies must send an electronic registration certificate to the university with the proof of insurance. For this purpose, as a student applicant, please request the "Meldegrund 10 für die FH Münster (Absendernummer: H0001824)".

In the case of private insurance, you must contact a German statutory health insurance company in order to be exempted from the obligation to pay contributions. For this purpose, please present the proof of your private health insurance. Ask the health insurance company to report your insurance status to the FH Münster using the reporting reason M10 for the FH Münster (H0001824).

The exemption from compulsory health insurance is generally valid for the entire duration of your studies and can only be applied for at the beginning of your studies.

Travel health insurance (Travel Insurance) is only valid for your visa and does not provide sufficient health insurance coverage for the duration of your studies in Germany. Therefore it is not accepted as proof of insurance.

In addition to health insurance, we recommend accident and liability insurance for your stay in Germany.

Finding a room in Münster or Steinfurt

Housing
In university towns, cheap housing is very much in demand. In Münster and Steinfurt it is therefore not easy to find an apartment or a room. So please start your search early and use various ways of searching. The Studierendenwerk offers furnished rooms at a reasonable price, where you can register online on a waiting list. There are also student dormitories run by church or private sponsors and many offers from private providers.
