Detailed description of the degree programme
The development of innovative materials creates important preconditions for new industrial processes and modern products. Thus, they promote social progress, improve quality of life and solve important problems in areas of energy technology, life-science or information technology.
Students of this course of study will acquire various competences for a broad range of tasks in Materials Science. The course content will look at the entire value chain which usually starts with an initial idea followed by an analysis, development and production (or development of new production methods). In this respect the course provides broad and sustained knowledge to meet demands in practice and research. Based on this research-related training students will be in a position to create and optimize products and processes in the material processing industry autonomously.
There are excellent job prospects within the industry or the possibility for a Phd. The course provides comprehensive knowledge for jobs as development- or test engineer in areas such as mechanical engineering, chemical industry, electrical engineering or the automotive industry. The University of Applied Sciences has excellent co-operations with the industry or Phd partners, so there are possibilities to build up an important network during the studies. Furthermore, there are double degree programmes which enable students to acquire additional degrees during their studies abroad and to qualify for an international job market.
Study Contents and Curricula
A basic understanding as well as development and design of new materials is paramount to the course.
Core modules include solid state physics, polymer science, anorganic material chemistry, characterization of materials via spectroscopic methods or electron microscopy, materials science and nanotechnology. A considerable part of practical training in our laboratories and research projects provide practical teaching from the beginning.
The Master degree course will be offered in English, optional modules may partly be chosen in German. The Master thesis can be completed in our laboratories, research institutes or with industrial partners.
