Contemporary education with a touch of tradition

The Faculty of Design can look back on a long, sound tradition - designers have been educated in Münster since 1878. The content of the apprenticeship in arts and crafts/handcrafts taught at the "Design, Painting and Modelling School", however, has very little to do with the current demands placed on professional designers today.

We offer contemporary, forward-looking education in which students gain the methodological, technical and artistic skills that enable them to play a part in solving social problems as independent, critical and responsible designer figures.

Main areas of study in Communications Design, Illustration, Media Design and Product Design

The range of teaching in the Bachelor programme comprises four main areas of study: Communications Design, Illustration, Media Design and Product Design. Our specific profile is the close interaction between all four main areas of study in projects that link the different fields of work together: Information Design, Functional Typography, Editorial Design, Corporate Design and Corporate Identity, Fiction and Book Illustration, Non-Fiction and Scientific Illustration, Moving Image and Animation, Interactive and Online Media, Documentary Photography and Photojournalism, Exhibition and Trade Fair Production, Development and Design of Packaging, Consumer Products and Product Systems.

Moreover, a Master degree programme in »Information Design« is expected to be launched as a specialised degree in 2010.

International orientation

Globalisation does not only play a role in the economy and society - it has also long been an element of design. Those who wish to communicate internationally require knowledge about other cultures and societies. The best way to gain such knowledge is to have first-hand experience, e.g. at the international workshops and through the partnership agreements the Faculty of Design has with institutions of higher education in Europe, Egypt, Korea, Turkey and Canada.
