The aim of the study was to perform pressure measurements in the Münster scoliosis corset in order to make statements about the reproducibility and reliability of the measurements. It should be checked to what extent the measuring method with FSR sensors is suitable for pressure detection in the corset and what conclusions can be drawn from this.

The pressure measurements were made at various points in the corset. Since a high pressure is to be expected especially at the area of the pads, the focus of the measurements was especially in this area. The effect of different movements, postures and belt strength on pressure distribution was examined.

The following figure shows the pressure values in a measuring interval of 60 seconds at three different measuring points (S2-S4) of the thoracic pad at the beginning of wearing and after 15 minutes.
While two of the measuring points show no change, the highest pressure value (measuring point S2) is reduced after 15 minutes. The same effect can be observed on the lumbar pad of the corset. Possible causes for this effect could be a change in posture and/or modified breathing, which should make the corset more comfortable to wear. The level of the measured pressure values is in the range of previously published data, however absolute values should be handled very carefully. The seemingly sinusoidal oscillations are caused by the respiratory movement. The study was conducted in cooperation with UKM ProTec Orthopädische Werkstätten GmbH.
