Scientometrics: Tools for Efficient Research

Scientometrics, an area of information science, refers to the analysis of scientific literature using statistical methods. Used interchangeable with bibliometrics, it has mainly been used for the evaluation of research productivity in universities and countries and also to assist researchers with finding relevant literature. With countless applications, it can also be used in the identification of potential collaborators working on a specific topic, the identification of key institutions and researchers in a field and the visualization of previous growth and future trends in various scientific disciplines. In this seminar, we will be exploring the Web of Science and perform basic bibliometric analysis using VosViewer and CitNetExplorer. By the end of the seminar, attendees should be able to effectively search the literature, identify important papers in their field of interest, visualize the history of their field and track its current trends.

Preliminary Schedule:

9-10AM Lecture on Scientometrics (Theory)

10-11AM Lecture on Various Tools (Web of Science, VosViewer and CitNetExplorer)

11-12NN Applications. Altogether, students will use the tools on a chosen topic.

1-3PM Students will apply the topic on their own research

3-4PM Students present their findings
