In a new teaching format created through a Wandelfonds project, students at the FH Münster learn how to critically assess scientific and non-scientific arguments and expert opinions and formulate their knowledge and opinions comprehensibly. After a couple of theoretical and foundational lectures on research, argumentation and the creation and value of podcasts, they come together in small groups to create their own podcast on a given topic. After two iterations, the course format has created two seasons of Hot Topics Explained that are freely available on Spotify.
As the last part of the course, the groups then debate two topics of other groups either on the pro or con side to learn how to create arguments, put them into a strategic order, prepare for counter arguments and how to negate them.
Student feedback has been very positive to this different and highly interactive form of learning and we will continue on improving the course further. Stay tuned for a new season of Hot Topics Explained after the coming semester!
