Requirements

For the master's program in Chemical Engineering we require a relevant undergraduate degree in a technical, engineering or engineering-based subject in the field of chemistry or a related area with an overall grade of 'good' (2.5) or better. The master's program in Materials Science and Engineering addresses to bachelor's degree graduates in the field of Materials Science and Engineering such as Chemistry, Physics and similar Engineering course with an overall grade of 'good' (2.5) or better. If you are not sure whether your bachelor's degree meets the requirements, please apply online, upload your documents (Bachelor degree, transcript of records, module descriptions) and we will check.

The master's program in Photonics requires a relevant first university degree in the field of engineering or natural sciences with an overall grade of at least 'good' (2,5).

 

If you have not earned your degree yet, you may apply with a provisional certificate and the transcript including an overall grade. You have to provide proof of completion no later than enrollment (September).

Proficiency in English is required on level B2 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, e.g. by receiving at least 620 points on a TOEIC Test, at least 87 points on an internet-based TOEFL Test or 567 points on the paper-based test, IELTS 6.0 or by presenting equivalent proof. If the bachelor's degree was completed in English, proof of this is sufficient. For countries where English is generally the language of instruction, no proof is required.

All compulsory courses are offered in English, some electives still in German. You don't have to provide evidence of German knowledge for application.

Application

You have to apply as an international applicant when your nationality is not German or of any other EU country and you never earned a degree (bachelor or master) in Germany or another EU country - and will not earn one before the start of this program.

You have to apply online from mid-February to May 31 for winter semester. For technical reasons you will see 'summer semester' in the online application although the application is only valid for winter semester. You don't have to participate in an aptitude test or selection procedure.

Application will just be online without any paper documents. Please upload the documents required during application. Documents sent subsequently by email cannot be taken into account. You don't have to send any documents by post yet. We don't charge an application fee. You will have to upload the following documents:

  • resume and passport copy
  • university degree
  • transcripts of records
  • grading system and degree requirements
  • other academic documents,, e.g. master's program, if available
  • English skills
  • optional: up to 3 documents that show additional qualifications.

English documents must not be translated into German. Letters of motivation or recommendation are not required.

After application the status is 'received'.

Admission

Applications will be checked by the faculty and the Admission Office. Depending on the date of application, admissions may be sent between April and June.

Given the large number of applications we receive, the Admission Office is unable to individually answer any requests on the status of the application. Please wait until you are informed.

Admissions will be sent by email. Rejections will presumably be sent by email in June, please directly contact the faculty in case of questions on the reason for rejection.

Enrollment

In case of admission, you will receive an email including the admission letter, the forms for enrollment and further information. You have to fill in the forms and send them with certified copies of your degree certificate and transcripts as well as the documents mentioned in the checklist in September by post. Please make sure that the documents are complete.

Since the beginning of 2022, you have to ask for a digital proof of the health insurance. Please find information at the link below.

After your documents have been received and processed, you will find the notification of fees (about 320 Euro) for transferring the semester fee in your myFH-Portal. Extra tuition fees are not charged. After the money has been booked, you will get the attestations on matriculation to your myFH-Portal and will be able to order the semester ticket. The FH-Card will be sent by post.
