After completing the degree programme, you will be able to assess different nutrition concepts and food based on nutrition physiology, sensory property, business administration and sustainability aspects, and to communicate them accordingly. You will develop new service concepts in the food sector and in the everyday provision of food to people. You will consider biochemical processes, ecological interrelations and target groups from an interdisciplinary perspective. You will also have the communication skills needed to provide advice and undertake service management.

As a nutritionist, you will be able to work in a wide range of areas. Examples include

• Product developer or quality management officer in the food industry
• Self-employed or employed nutrition advisor
• Instructor in adult education
• Specialist journalist
• Manager of a catering company or a large private household.

After graduating, you can also opt to pursue one of our Master’s programmes:

• Sustainability in Service Management and Food Industries (M.Sc.)

Our Home Economics and Nutritional Sciences degree programme is divided into three sections: foundation studies, in-depth studies and a final block of practice. During the first two semesters, you will gain a fundamental knowledge of science, nutrition science, social science and business administration.

During your in-depth studies, you will opt for one of three specialisations:

1. Consultancy and Service Management

In this field, you will learn how a company ensures the health and safety of its employees as well as the quality of its services.

2. Nutrition and Health

In this field, you will explore topics such as: What does ‘healthy food’ mean to different groups of people? What impact does food have on our bodies and health in general? What constitutes an organic product?

3. Food Industry

In this field, you will learn how to market products successfully and discover how companies produce food safely. You will also learn how to identify consumer preferences.

• Modern labs

Our well-equipped labs provide ideal conditions for putting knowledge into practice. Examples include a test kitchen with a sensory lab, food chemistry facilities, nutrition medicine facilities, and a labour economics lab.

• Culture of teaching and learning

Our tutors will accompany you at the start of your degree programme, ensuring a smooth transition to university. At a later stage, small work groups and close contacts with the teaching staff will be conductive to a positive learning atmosphere.

• International outlook

We are part of a network of European partner universities, and also cooperate with universities in Latin America. These connections will enable you to study or spend your practical semester abroad. You can also raise your international profile at Münster by taking some modules in English.

A distinctive feature of our department is the affiliated Institute of Sustainable Nutrition and Food Production (iSuN) – an interdepartmental research facility that carries out research contracts for companies, associations and authorities. Thanks to iSuN, we can offer you a consistently high level of cutting-edge teaching and research.
