Detailed description of the degree programme

How can we create an environmentally sustainable economy? In what ways can material and energy cycles become closed systems in order to save resources? Which materials and production techniques are future-oriented? As a chemical engineer, you have acquired the technical background to pave the road to new solutions. Our "Chemical Engineering" degree program will provide you with a comprehensive set of skills in chemistry and process engineering – enabling you to competently tackle urgent problems, ranging from environmental protection to sustainable energy supply.

Goals

Our bachelor’s degree program provides a fundamentally solid education in chemistry and process engineering that provides students with the expertise and methodological competencerequired for their future careers. One goal of our program is to enable students to analyze occupation-specific processes and problems and to develop practical solutions that incorporate the use of multidisciplinary contexts.

Occupational fields

A significant part of your education will take place in cooperation with regional and, if desired, nationwide industrial companies, rendering you a sought-after expert in the industrial sector? Typical occupational fields and areas of employment are, for example:

  • Chemical and pharmaceutical industry
  • Food processing
  • Energy sector
  • Product development
  • Quality control
  • Laboratory leader
  • Project engineer

Upon completion of your bachelor studies you have the option to further your education and achieve a master’s degree, enter the research field - or to work your way up to the top ranks in industry.

Contents and the course of studies

Our Bachelor’s degree programme is split into 2 stages:

Semesters 1–3: Chemical and technical basics for everyone in the mutual basic studies:

  • Inorganic, organic and physical chemistry
  • Mathematics
  • Process technology
  • Technical chemistry
  • Physics
  • Data Science

Semesters 4–6: During the second stage of your studies, you can organise your studies flexibly and set your own focal points:

  • Compulsory modules:
    • Specialisation in analytical and chemical-technical areas
    • Scientific communication
  • Elective modules: You can select subjects that correspond to your personal interests and professional goals from a broad and continuously-adapted range of courses - currently, you will find modules from these subject areas in the chemical-technical area:
    • Energy technology, raw material extraction and basic chemistry: e.g., extraction of hydrogen and ammonia, extraction of ingredients from renewable raw materials, particle technology for optimising building materials, pigments and ceramics
    • Materials science, natural products chemistry or instrumental analysis: e.g., the use of polymers, semiconductors, glasses or renewable raw materials, under molecular or structural aspects
  • Project studies: If you have demonstrated that you are particularly capable and independent during the first three semesters, parts of the compulsory elective area can be completed in individually-determined project studies after suitability has been established - for example, in cooperation with an internal or external research group, or even with a company.
  • Final semester: In the final semester, you complete a 12-week practical stage in a company or institute of your choice. There you will apply your knowledge, get to know daily working life and, often also, your future employer. You then write your Bachelor’s thesis, which is completed with a colloquium.

Mobility in the second stage of your studies: Our student advisory service is happy to support you with study or final semesters abroad, or with projects with industry or research partners on a European or international level.

Why choose our program?

  • Practical experience
Large amount of hands-on experience gained right from the start
  • Research
The chance to participate in interesting R&D projects, for example as a student research assistan
  • Mentoring
Above-average quality of support: Our staff, tutors and professors are readily available to offer advice, mentoring and assistance throughout the entire duration of your studies. Small groups, seminars and a wide range of lectures ensure a very good student-teacher ratio and an optimal learning environment.
  • Partner universities
We have a large number of long-standing contacts in industry and with partner universities in Germany and abroad. We will gladly support you in organizing a semester abroad and ensure your transfer credits are accepted allowing you to finish your degree within the designated time frame.
