Detailed description of the degree programme

Software systems allow companies to improve their business processes and create new business models. As an IT business engineer, you will design and develop these applications on the basis of modern (web) technologies, always taking into account specific professional practices and integrating an economic perspective.

Objectives

After obtaining your degree, you will be able to analyse and design business information systems. You will be conversant with the most up-to-date database and programming languages and know how to develop, integrate, test, provide, improve and maintain software systems and web-based systems, as well as database and application systems. In addition, after completing your studies, you will be able to analyse and create structures and processes relevant for businesses. You will also know the mathematical concepts required for these (for example, analysis and linear algebra) and how to use them for applications in business administration. Furthermore, you will have the skills to plan and manage projects and to communicate the results comprehensibly. You will be a results-oriented member of the team.

Occupational fields

Your qualifications will put you in demand for companies in a wide range of sectors and of all sizes. After completing your degree, various options will open up to you as you enter the job market. You might work as a software/web/application developer, or as a system or data analyst in a bank or an insurance company, a commercial enterprise, an energy supplier, a telecommunications company, a software firm or an internet service provider, or as an IT consultant in a management consultancy. IT business engineers are also in high demand in the civil service.

Content and course sequence

Our degree programme in Business Informatics is divided into a basic, an advanced and an expansion stage. Each stage lasts two semesters, allowing you to obtain your degree after three years.

In the basic stage, you will acquire basic IT and business knowledge. Typical subjects are programming, web development, database systems, and economics and business administration. In addition, we offer interdisciplinary modules, in which you learn the academic techniques needed for your studies.

In the advanced stage, you will enhance your knowledge, enabling you to design software systems and develop prototypes. Moreover, you will learn how to analyse how businesses operate internally as well as with suppliers and clients. Your curriculum will include software and web engineering, business application systems, and accounting, operational business processes, and business law. In additional modules, you will improve your communication and presentation skills, as well as your knowledge of English.

In the final expansion stage, you will become familiar with application-oriented aspects of business informatics in subjects such as business engineering and project management. In addition, you will have the chance to select additional modules from a wide range of elective courses, tailoring your profile to your own interests and in a well-focused manner. After six semesters, you will conclude your degree programme with a Bachelor thesis.

Business Informatics is a practice-integrated degree programme and includes two blocks of practice, lasting 9 and 24 weeks. The first block of practice takes place at the beginning of the fifth semester in one of our partner companies. Here, you will gain a first impression of your future career. In the second block of practice in the sixth semester, you will then perform complex tasks within a project.
