Detailed description of the aptitude test

The following information applies to graduates of the Bachelor’s programme at MSA | Münster School of Architecture as well as to graduates of Bachelor’s programmes at other faculties of architecture in Germany.

The aim of the aptitude test is to determine applicants’ creative aptitude.

How and when can I register for an admission interview?

Registrations for the aptitude test are made online via our myFH Portal for applicants. The “Anmeldung starten” (Start application) button will automatically direct you to the login or registration.

It is usually possible to register for the aptitude test between January and April each year. This year, the registration period is from 26 January 2018 to 29 April 2018. After registering, you will receive an automated confirmation email. Some time in May, you will receive a written invitation to attend an individual discussion by post.

What must I consider if I have already studied, or am currently studying, Architecture at Master’s level at another university?

If you have already studied, or are currently studying, Architecture at Master’s level at another university and wish to transfer to the Master’s programme at MSA, then you are a student wishing to change universities. The same basic requirements for admission / prerequisites for entry apply to students wishing to change universities, regardless of the previous number of semesters completed.

This means that you will have to attend and pass our admission interview, and provide evidence that you have spent at least 12 weeks doing practical work for an architecture firm or any other relevant organisation. More information about this and other issues can be found on the MSA | Münster School of Architecture website.

How and when can I, as a student wishing to change universities, register for the aptitude test?

You too must register online for the aptitude test via the applicants’ portal myFH. During the registration process, you will be asked whether you have already studied Architecture. If this is the case, you will be directed to our detailed information for students wishing to change universities.

As a student wishing to change universities, you will usually have the option of embarking on our Master’s programme in Architecture in the summer semester or the winter semester.

Do I have to submit any documents when registering for the admission interview?

Yes. When registering online for the admission interview, please answer the questions we ask, and upload your latest transcript of records or – if appropriate – your Bachelor/Diplom certificate.

MSA | Münster School of Architecture graduates need not submit their transcripts of records because we already have them.

What should I bring with me to the admission interview?

Candidates should bring with them to the admission interview a portfolio containing at least 2 Design projects and 2 Construction Design projects from the Bachelor’s programme, as well as their Bachelor’s project, where applicable.

What should I, as a student wishing to change universities, bring with me to the aptitude test?

Students wishing to change universities should bring with them to the admission interview projects from their current Master’s programme from the areas of Design and Construction Design. If no projects have been completed yet on the Master’s programme, then students should bring with them projects from the Bachelor’s programme and their Bachelor’s project.

What does the admission interview involve?

All candidates are invited to take the test on the same day, but at different times. After a brief welcome, the candidates are divided into two groups: one group is given a short guided tour of Münster School of Architecture and our different labs (lasers, 3D printers, etc.), while the other group starts with the admission interview.

The admission interview takes place between you and a committee comprising two professors and two Master’s students. The work that you have brought with you will of course form the basis for discussion, in addition to the experience you have gained outside higher education.

The committee will want to determine during the conversation whether the skills acquired on your first degree programme will enable you to complete the Master’s programme at MSA.

The discussion will take between 30 and 45 minutes. You will then be asked to leave the room briefly so that the committee can discuss your performance. The committee will tell you the result immediately afterwards. It will also be given to you in writing. The work you brought with you will be handed back to you.

What does the admission interview involve in the case of students wishing to change universities?

The admission interview is the same for all candidates. You will additionally be assigned to a semester; you will need this notification for registration. Students cannot be assigned any higher than to the second semester.

How and when will I get the result of my admission interview?

After your discussion with the committee, you will be asked to leave the room briefly so that the committee can discuss your performance and complete the assessment form. You will be told the result immediately afterwards. The result will also be given to you in writing. Please make sure that you keep this document in a safe place. If you passed the admission interview, you will need this notification to register on the degree programme. Your portfolio will be handed back to you.

For how long is the result of my admission interview valid?

The notification of having passed the admission interview is valid for three enrolment sessions. If you do not intend to start university that year, you can register with us using this notification one or even two years later, provided that you meet the other criteria for admission.

Please note that, as a rule, only winter semester intakes are possible.

What if I fail the admission interview?

If you do not pass the admission interview, you will not be able to take our Master’s programme at MSA for the time being. However, you may have another go at taking our admission interview next year.

What if I am unable to attend the admission interview?

A standard alternative date is not offered. Since it is absolutely necessary for you to be present at the admission interview, we cannot offer the option of holding the conversation via Skype or on the phone. Please let us know if there is an important reason why you are unable to attend the admission interview. We will then try to arrange another date for you. Therefore please plan carefully, and ask the MSA Centre of Student and Examination Affairs well in advance if we can offer you an alternative appointment. We do not consider holidays, birthday celebrations or similar events to be sufficient grounds for offering an alternative appointment.
