Detailed description of the degree programme
Professional nursing is undergoing change. The demands placed on the profession are growing. Our dual degree programme in Nursing will prepare you for future challenges and new requirements in the profession. In addition to completing an apprenticeship, you will also obtain a university degree, providing you with the academic skills required to work in a nursing team or to pursue a postgraduate degree.
After completing the degree programme, you will have the skills required to provide science-based nursing care. As a nursing expert, you will be able to act independently, analyse nursing requirements in an independent, science-based manner, and implement and evaluate nursing processes. You will be able to offer and assess counselling and training. You will also actively contribute to making improvements in your occupational field by introducing innovations and reflecting on them.
The close connection between study and practical training will improve your employability, both nationally and internationally. You will be able to choose from a wide range of activities in the field of nursing, such as:
- Patient counselling
- Introduction of national expert standards in the fields of activity
- Discharge management
- Quality management
- Promotion of multiprofessional collaboration
- Project management
Content and course sequence
The content of the degree programme is divided into three areas: Nursing and Health Sciences, Care Management, and Foundations of Selected Related Disciplines. During the first five semesters, you will pursue distance learning while completing your apprenticeship. Each semester, there will be six days of mandatory attendance at Münster University of Applied Sciences.
During these first few semesters, you will explore fundamental topics such as health promotion, ethics, the health system and nursing theory. You will gain a basic knowledge of related disciplines (such as psychology or statistics), and will become acquainted with methods of care management (such as case management or networking). You will learn most of the course content independently via our e-learning platform, which offers correspondence units. The workload involved is around six hours per week. However, this does not mean that you will be left completely to your own devices: our learning coaches will be available to provide advice and support. ‘ILIAS’, the online learning platform, will be available at all times for contacting other students and teaching staff.
In the fifth semester, when you will be able to concentrate fully on your final vocational exam, you will not need to attend any university courses.
Once you have completed your apprenticeship, you will continue to study part-time at Wilhelm Löhe Akademie for three semesters. During this time, you will enhance your knowledge in selected areas, such as project management, consultancy or quality management. In the eighth semester, you will conclude your Bachelor of Science degree at Münster University of Applied Sciences after writing a Bachelor thesis.
Why choose us
At Münster University of Applied Sciences, we will provide comprehensive support throughout your studies. Our learning coaches will accompany you for the first four semesters, helping you to prepare the correspondence units. You will use the ‘ILIAS’ online learning platform to obtain the latest information about your studies and to communicate with other students and teaching staff. You will, of course, also receive support in person: during the first four semesters, peer counselling will be offered at the start of each week of mandatory attendance. This way, we will help you to strike and maintain the right balance between your training and academic studies. You will be able to address any difficulties encountered and directly discuss any unresolved professional issues.
Münster School of Health applies cutting-edge teaching techniques, one of which is our ‘Skills Lab’ – a simulation room where various patient care scenarios can be acted out. With the help of professional actors, we can simulate outpatient healthcare situations and other typical situations in the everyday working environment, such as therapy sessions and conflicts. Video recordings will enable you to make a detailed analysis of the simulations afterwards in class.
The close link between theory and practice at Münster University of Applied Sciences is also evident in our numerous partnerships with clinical institutions. This will enable you to apply your knowledge to practice in a variety of teaching projects whilst still at university, and to forge links in the profession at the same time.
