Detailed description of the aptitude test

The aim of the aptitude test is to determine applicants’ creative aptitude.

How and when can I register for the aptitude test?

Registrations for the aptitude test are made online via our myFH Portal for applicants.

In order to start the registration process, simply register and request an FH ID. Only then will you be able to proceed to register for the aptitude test. The “Anmeldung starten” (Start application) button will automatically direct you to registration.

It is usually possible to register for the aptitude test between January and April each year. This year, the registration period is from 26 January 2018 to 29 April 2018. After registering, you will receive an automated confirmation email. Some time in May, you will receive a written invitation to attend an individual discussion by post.

What must I consider if I have already studied, or am currently studying, Architecture at another university?

If you have already studied, or are currently studying, Architecture at another university and wish to transfer to the Bachelor’s programme at MSA, then we consider you to be a member of the group of students wishing to change universities.

The same basic requirements for admission apply to this group of students, regardless of the previous number of semesters completed: you will need a certificate from a faculty of architecture in Germany stating that you have passed the aptitude test and completed a 13-week construction site placement.

How and when can I, as a student wishing to change universities, register for the aptitude test?

You too must register online for the aptitude test via the myFH Portal. During the registration process, you will be asked whether you have already studied Architecture. If this is the case, you will be directed to our detailed information for students wishing to change universities.

As a student wishing to change universities, you will usually have the option of embarking on our Bachelor’s programme in Architecture in the summer semester or the winter semester.

If you wish to change to our university starting from the winter semester, please register for the aptitude test in the summer semester. It is usually possible to register for the aptitude test between January and April each year. This year, the registration period is from 26 January 2018 to 29 April 2018.

If you wish to change to our university starting from the summer semester, please send an email to the Centre of Student and Examination Affairs: msa-pruefungsamt@fh-muenster.de. The closing date for registration is 4 February 2018.

When will the aptitude test take place?

All candidates take the aptitude test on the same day, but at different times.

The date is arranged from year to year, but is usually around late May or early June. This year (2018), aptitude tests will be held on 23 May.

When will the aptitude test for students wishing to change universities take place?

Do I have to submit any documents when registering for the aptitude test?

No. When registering online for the aptitude test, simply answer the questions we ask.

Must I have completed the construction site placement when registering for the aptitude test?

No. Evidence of having completed the construction site placement is submitted when enrolling on the degree programme.

What should I bring with me to the aptitude test?

Candidates should bring with them to the aptitude test a portfolio (maximum size A 1 = 60 x 84 cm) containing at least 15 samples of their artistic/creative architecture-related work (drawings, sketches, paintings, up to 5 photos, where applicable). The aim of the portfolio is to demonstrate candidates’ special interest in design. At least five of these work samples must refer to a particular theme or issue.

A different theme is set each year. A description of the theme and general examples of works from portfolios are provided on the MSA | Münster School of Architecture website.

The portfolio

You will need to create drawings/sketches for your portfolio. In the process, concentrate on everything that is perceptible. During our discussion, we will chat about the spatial and authentic experiences represented in your drawings.

The aim is to capture spatial aspects from your perspective, not to mechanically copy drawings. For this reason, you should not 1) copy from photos, illustrations, etc. or 2) use any technical aids (ruler, drawing programs, etc.). Apart from that, all other techniques are permitted. Three-dimensional objects may only be presented using a maximum of five photos. Samples of your work that have been photocopied or duplicated in any other way must be marked accordingly. You should present only very few samples of the work you produced at school.

Please label each piece of work with your name and the date.

When choosing your motifs, think about how to express your interest in the subject of architecture. Perfectionism is by no means expected.

Additional documents

Besides your portfolio, you will also need to bring two forms that have to be completed: a list of your work, numbered consecutively, and a signed declaration confirming that you created the portfolio on your own. Both forms are available below for download.

What should I, as a student wishing to change universities, bring with me to the aptitude test?

Students wishing to change universities should bring with them to the aptitude test the following:

  1. Projects from previous architecture studies: 2 Design projects and 2 Structural Design projects.
  2. A portfolio (maximum size A 1 = 60 x 84 cm) containing 5 drawings with reference to a particular theme or issue. A different theme is set each year. A description of the theme and general examples of works from portfolios are provided on the Münster School of Architecture website. The aim is to capture spatial aspects from your perspective, not to mechanically copy drawings. For this reason, you should not copy from photos, illustrations, etc. or use any technical aids (ruler, drawing programs, etc.). Apart from that, all other techniques are permitted. Please label each piece of work with your name and the date.
  3. Besides your portfolio, you will also need to bring two forms that have to be completed: a list of your work, numbered consecutively, and a signed declaration confirming that you created the portfolio on your own.
  4. A current summary of achievements (overview of grades/transcript of records).

Are there any preparatory courses for creating portfolios?

We do not offer any preparatory courses for the aptitude test or for degree programmes. Nor do we make any specific recommendations. However, there’s no reason why you shouldn’t take a drawing course to improve your skills.

What we do offer is portfolio consultation, which is usually held on campus on the first Saturday of the month from February to May. Please refer to our Student Representative Committee’s website for more information. It is not necessary to register for portfolio consultation.

What does the aptitude test involve?

All candidates are invited to take the test on the same day, but at different times. After a brief welcome, the candidates are divided into two groups: one group is given a short guided tour of Münster School of Architecture and our different labs (lasers, 3D printers, etc.), while the other group starts with the aptitude test.

The test involves a conversation between you and a committee comprising two professors and two students. The aim of the conversation is to determine whether you have the artistic/creative aptitude to take the Bachelor’s programme in Architecture at MSA | Münster School of Architecture.

The committee will assesses these three criteria: perception, imagination and illustration skills. Three members of the committee award marks for each of the three categories, which are used to determine the average mark.

One of the topics of conversation will be the work that you have brought with you. The committee will also want to know a bit about you. Where appropriate, you may be asked to make a sketch during the talk.

The conversation will take around 30 minutes.

What does the aptitude test involve in the case of students wishing to change universities?

Essentially, the conversation is the same as that for first-year students. Since you have already studied Architecture, there will, of course, be a different basis for discussion. The conversation will revolve around your 5 drawings and projects from previous architecture studies that you brought with you.

If your aptitude for studying at MSA | Münster School of Architecture is determined, you will be assigned to a semester. Written confirmation of the semester to which you have been assigned is required so that you can register for the degree programme. Students cannot be assigned any higher than to the fourth semester. Whether previous credit can be transferred will be discussed at a later date. Please contact the MSA Centre of Student and Examination Affairs accordingly.

How and when will I get the result of my aptitude test?

After your discussion with the committee, you will be asked to leave the room briefly so that the committee can discuss your performance and complete the assessment form. You will be told the result immediately afterwards. The result will also be given to you in writing. Please make sure that you keep this document in a safe place. If you passed the aptitude test, you will need this notification to register on the degree programme. Your portfolio will be handed back to you.

For how long is the result of my aptitude test valid?

The notification of having passed the aptitude test is valid for three enrolment sessions. If you do not intend to start university that year, you can apply online for the degree programme and register using this notification one or even two years later, provided that you meet all of the other criteria for admission.

Please note that, as a rule, only winter semester intakes are possible.

What if I fail the aptitude test?

If you fail our aptitude test, the following options are open to you:

  1. We will accept aptitude tests that candidates have passed at other faculties of architecture in Germany, as long as it was less than three years ago. The design of the test is irrelevant. Not all faculties of architecture require an aptitude test. It is up to you to find out which faculties offer an aptitude test, and what such a test entails. We are unable to provide any information on other universities’ aptitude tests.
  2. You may also, of course, have another go at taking our aptitude text next year.

What if I am unable to attend the aptitude test?

We do our best to set the date of the aptitude test so that it does not conflict with Abitur examinations or apprenticeship examinations. Please let us know if there is an important reason why you are unable to attend the aptitude test (such as the reasons stated above). We will then try to arrange another date for you.

A standard alternative date is not offered. Since it is absolutely necessary for you to be present at the aptitude test, we cannot offer the option of holding the conversation via Skype or on the phone. Therefore please plan carefully, and ask the MSA Centre of Student and Examination Affairs well in advance if we can offer you an alternative appointment. We do not consider holidays, birthday celebrations or similar events to be sufficient grounds for offering an alternative appointment.
