Language requirements:

Applicants who did not acquire their study qualification at a German-speaking institution must demonstrate that they have knowledge of German at level C1 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFRL), for example by proving that they have passed the TestDaF (Test Deutsch als Fremdsprache) with an average score of ‘4’, or must furnish equivalent proof.

Detailed description of the degree programme

Connecting the world through optical data transmission, saving energy through LED technology, creating clean energy through photovoltaics and hydrogen, developing new materials and processing materials gently, as well as ensuring safe and precise surgery - these are all areas that would not be possible without physical and optical technologies. In our degree programme in Physical Technologies and Laser Technology, we teach you both the necessary knowledge in the natural and engineering sciences as well as comprehensive practical skills to become a developer in these fields. Teaching takes place not only in the lecture hall, but also in our modern labs. Furthermore, our numerous contacts with industry open the doors to hands-on business experience during your time at university.

Objectives

After obtaining your degree, you will have a broad basis of knowledge and skills in science and engineering. This will make you a versatile problem-solver who is able to develop products in many different fields without assistance, as well as analyse technical problems and tackle them in a structured manner. Your specialisations will be optical technology. In addition, you will learn how to conduct and present academic work during your degree programme. You will also develop your ability to work in a team and prepare for working in an international environment.

Occupational fields

As a versatile asset with a comprehensive set of skills, you will have the possibility to work in a wide range of exciting fields: in optical technology or materials science, or perhaps in the automotive industry, mechatronics, the information and communications industry, or environmental engineering. The development departments of classic mechanical and electrical engineering sectors may also be in your future. You might work, for example, as an engineer for a microchip manufacturer, design modern devices as a design engineer or do research in the development department of a lighting manufacturer. You will have good prospects of finding a job in vocational training or sales and product management or of becoming self-employed.

Alternatively, you may continue with a Master’s programme as a follow-up to your Bachelor’s degree, or even continue to doctoral studies.

Content and course sequence

In Laser Engineering, you will spend the first few semesters learning the basics of science and engineering. At this stage, the curriculum will include subjects such as mathematics, physics, chemistry, mechanics, design engineering, and computer science. At a later stage, your subjects will become increasingly specialised. By then, you will design a laser, for example, and optimise its power.

In the sixth and final semester, you will write your Bachelor thesis. Simultaneously, a three-month block of practice in a company or a research institution will ease your transition to employment considerably. Alternatively, you may continue with a Master’s programme in „Photonics“ or „Materials Science and Engineering“ as a follow-up to your Bachelor’s degree and remain at Münster University of Applied Sciences.
