Detailed description of the degree programme

Sustainable commerce is one of the great challenges of our time. After all, we will only be able to improve our current quality of life and secure it for future generations if we manage to strike a balance between economic, ecological and social aspects. The service management and food industries have an important role to play in this respect: environmentally compatible methods of production, resource conservation and the supply of healthy food are crucial factors for sustainable development and a forward-looking economy. Our Master’s programme will prepare you for the conceptual challenges involved in these industries – in an innovative and interdisciplinary manner with an international outlook.

Objectives

In our degree programme, specialised topics concerning the service management and food industries are combined with multidisciplinary skills. You will acquire a broad knowledge base and will become acquainted with numerous research methods. In small teams, you will tackle case studies and projects, practising management methodologies and your social skills. At Münster University of Applied Sciences, you will also be actively involved in our modern teaching concepts.

Occupational fields

Our degree programme will qualify you specifically for nutrition-related areas that focus on sustainability, such as:

  • Management of domestic and personal services
  • Product management in the food industry
  • Quality management
  • Subject-related communication, training and consultancy
  • Fields of activity outside the service management and food industries, such as government ministries and associations

Content and course sequence

With regard to content, the degree programme is mainly characterised by the three following elements:

  • The balance between market requirements and ecology,
  • The equal consideration of the individual, society and the environment,
  • The responsible use of resources in production, processing and transportation.

In the courses, we will teach you the skills needed to meet the challenges of sustainable service management and food industries. Examples include analysing the market situation in the food industry, developing supporting services and consumer information or positioning sustainable products and services on the market.

The compulsory modules focus on social, economic and scientific content such as lifestyles, sustainable consumption and sustainability management. A wide range of core elective modules will also give you the opportunity to specialise as you wish in areas such as consumer and food culture, product development, catering services, or health communication. In the project module, you will develop your individual profile by dealing in-depth with a given topic.

Our lecture programmes will give you insights into research and development organisations, sustainably managed companies and non-governmental organisations. Throughout the degree programme, you will also have the opportunity to get to know various professional fields and to establish industry contacts.

Classes usually take place from Wednesday to Friday and, in rare cases, on Saturday as well.
