Substitution of fossil fuels is nowadays of importance as natural resources are getting scarce. Some high metal containing waste e.g. Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) or light fraction from automobile shredder which already contains the required energy necessary for its recycling processing. However, the process must be performed in such a way that valuable metals do not get lost during combustion or inefficient (pre-) processing of the material. Therefore the material's properties such as particle size, carbon content, volatile matter, etc. are to be determined, as well as the proper slag system to run the combustion and metallurgical process and to maintain optimum energy control. Possibilities of pre-treatments processes will be also evaluated such as pyrolysis and improved material's separation. Feasibility of the recycling process will be tested in a demonstrative scale plant which includes a Top Blown Rotary Converter (TBRC) connected to a state of the art off gas cleaning system located at IME institute in Aachen.
